Newborn Sleep
“When can I start to help my baby to fall asleep on their own?”
It sounds obviously but newborn babies do know how to sleep already but sleeping in the womb and sleeping outside of you in the world will be a completely different experience for them.
This is a reason why they often prefer contact naps and do not like to be put down. You are warm and familiar. Contact naps are really important for your newborn but wanting to put them down when you need to is totally fine too.
It is really common for newborns to need lots of support and comfort to get to sleep like they used to in the womb. This includes swaddling to feel secure, white noise to replicate familiar sound, movement- swaying and rocking and also feeding to sleep.
Some newborns will fall asleep easily while others need more help to. This is really normal as there’s so much going on for a newborn baby however as they have the ability to sleep and if they have fed well, had a good wind and it’s around their wake window you could practice the odd nap in their sleep space when ever you feel ready. *Remember that you need to be in the same room as them.
