Naps and The Dark
Should naps be in the dark?
Some babies will happily nap in the light and others need it to be dark.
When making this decision, there are a few things you could consider;
A newborn doesn’t start producing their own melatonin (sleepy hormone) until around 2 months so keeping the room dark for naps is not important. Having naps in the light can also help your baby’s developing circadian rhythm.
Some older babies find it harder to switch off and are very alert and overstimulated so by having a darker environment this may help them. A darker environment can also really help with early morning waking, light will tell the body clock to wake up so making it dark will help your little one stay asleep.
If you are having a challenging time achieving naps/long naps, it might be worth trying to make the environment darker for a week or so to see if this helps with naps.
